Las Cucharillas Wetland Nature Reserve

Las Cucharillas Wetland Nature Reserve is one of the last coastal wetlands in the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico, located in the Juana Matos community in Cataño. Covering approximately 1,236 acres, the area protects an estuarine ecosystem that includes a freshwater herbaceous wetland, Laguna Secreta, a small islet, and remnants of the Río Hondo and Río Bayamón wetland systems. It is home to nearly 190 species — endemic, native, and migratory — all four mangrove types found in Puerto Rico, and the cobana negra, an endangered tree. The reserve acts as a natural filter, controlling urban flooding in Cataño and purifying water before it flows into the bay. The Juana Matos community began defending the area in the 1980s; the DRNA granted co-management rights in the 1990s, and the reserve was officially designated in 2009. It offers guided tours and environmental education. Open Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:00 PM; Saturday visits require prior coordination. Admission is free.
