Northeast Ecological Corridor

Luquillo

Northeast Ecological Corridor is a protected natural reserve of approximately 2,970 acres (1,202 hectares) located along the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, spanning the municipalities of Luquillo and Fajardo. Permanently designated as a natural reserve in 2013 under Law No. 8, the reserve harbors 866 species of flora and fauna, 54 of which are classified as critical or endangered. Its 8.74 kilometers of beaches constitute one of the three most important nesting sites for the leatherback turtle (tinglar) in U.S. territory. The area includes the bioluminescent Laguna Aguas Prietas, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and coastal and humid forests, representing all six ecological life zones of Puerto Rico within just 21 kilometers.
