Guánica State Forest is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of approximately 9,000 acres on the southwest coast, considered the best example of tropical dry forest in the Caribbean. Designated a forest reserve in 1919 and biosphere reserve in 1981, it contains more than 700 plant species and provides habitat for 48 threatened animal species. It offers 12 varied trails, coral reef scuba diving, fishing, and biking in designated areas.
