Humacao Nature Reserve Efraín Archilla Díez
Humacao
Humacao Nature Reserve Efraín Archilla Díez, also known as Punta Santiago Nature Reserve, is an approximately 3,000-acre (3,186 cuerdas) nature reserve on the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico, straddling the Punta Santiago ward of Humacao and the Río ward of Naguabo. Established in 1986 as the Humacao Wildlife Refuge to protect the region's characteristic Pterocarpus forest, it also encompasses wetlands, six mangrove lagoon systems (Mandri I, II, III, Santa Teresa I, II, and Las Palmas), and the river mouths of the Antón Ruiz River and several streams. The reserve preserves remnants of 19th-century sugarcane infrastructure and World War II military bunkers, including a former U.S. Army lookout post atop El Morrillo hill. Activities include hiking and cycling trails, kayaking, bike rentals, designated fishing areas, and picnic areas. The trail to El Morrillo offers panoramic views of the reserve, Punta Santiago Beach, El Yunque National Forest, Cayo Santiago (Monkey Island), and Vieques.
