Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Nature Reserve

The Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Nature Reserve is the most ecologically valuable protected natural area on the island municipality of Vieques. Its most remarkable feature is Puerto Mosquito bay, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. This extraordinary biological phenomenon was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1980 by the U.S. National Park Service. The reserve is protected by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) and co-managed by the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico.
