Cueva del Indio Nature Reserve

Arecibo

Cueva del Indio Nature Reserve encompasses a seaside cave carved into limestone cliffs along the Atlantic coast in the Islote ward of Arecibo. The site contains numerous Taíno petroglyphs, making it one of the most significant pre-Columbian archaeological sites in Puerto Rico. The reserve also protects turtlegrass meadows critical for West Indian manatees and a rich seabird and shorebird community. In 2007 it was recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International as part of the Caño Tiburones conservation zone. The reserve is managed by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER).
