Sierra Pandura Protected Natural Area

Maunabo

Sierra Pandura Protected Natural Area, also known as Cuchilla de Pandura or La Pica, is a reserve of approximately 179 cuerdas located in the municipalities of Maunabo and Yabucoa in southeastern Puerto Rico. The subtropical forest landscape descending from the Sierra de Cayey is dominated by guajonals — volcanic granite monoliths approximately 90 million years old, sculpted by erosion into unique cracks, caves, and cavities. These rock formations give their name and shelter to the coquí guajón (Eleutherodactylus cooki), an endemic and vulnerable Puerto Rican frog that depends on rock fissures for reproduction. The area is managed by Para la Naturaleza.
