A project that enhances every visitor’s experience
Laura Santana, a Scout from Troop 411 in Ponce, has completed an extraordinary Eagle Scout project that is already making a difference in one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic natural areas: the Guilarte State Forest.
Her initiative focused on renewing and improving the forest’s signage, a space visited by hundreds of hikers, families, and nature lovers each year. Over time, many of the informational signs had deteriorated, making it harder for visitors to orient themselves and limiting the educational value of the area.
But Laura didn’t settle for simply replacing signs, instead she aimed to elevate the experience to a whole new level.
An interactive map to explore Guilarte like never before
As part of the project, Laura installed a new interactive map, a modern tool that allows visitors to better understand the trails, routes, points of interest, and natural resources within the forest.
The Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources stated in their social media accounts about Laura's project:
“This tool will provide visitors with guidance and information about the forest’s trails and natural resources, strengthening environmental education and the ecotourism experience.”
This map not only makes navigation easier; it also promotes a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and encourages responsible practices within the forest.
Scout leadership in action
Laura’s project is a powerful example of what Scout leadership truly means: identifying a real need, mobilizing resources, working as a team, and leaving a lasting impact on the community.
