Big Tree Trail

Big Tree Trail is a paved, self-guided interpretive trail connecting the El Yunque Recreation Area to La Mina Falls. It takes its name from the large Tabonuco trees lining the route, and features educational kiosks and covered picnic shelters. The trail ends at La Mina, a waterfall cascading over 35 feet through a jumble of huge rocks into a pool where swimming is possible (water temperature 60-65°F). From there it connects to La Mina Trail toward Palo Colorado. This is one of the busiest areas in the forest, so visitors should arrive early and monitor weather conditions for flash flood risk. A moderate trail with steep sections, 164 feet (50 m) of elevation change over 0.9 miles (1.4 km).
