Caminos de Monte Pirata Cabo Rojo

Monte Pirata in Cabo Rojo is a ecological park on Puerto Rico’s western coast, offering a diverse and moderately technical trail system that winds through a unique subtropical dry forest. Originally developed as a mountain biking destination, the park has become a favorite for hikers due to its well-maintained, six-mile network of single-track loops. As you navigate the terrain of compact dirt and loose rock, the trail rewards you with dramatic elevation changes and panoramic vistas of Boquerón Bay and the Caribbean Sea.Beyond the natural scenery, the hike features intriguing historical elements, as paths snake through the ruins of a former juvenile correctional facility now being reclaimed by nature. The area serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife, where hikers frequently encounter iguanas, various bird species, and century-old Guanacaste trees. Because the climate in Cabo Rojo is notoriously hot and dry with limited shade, hikers should prepare with sturdy footwear for steep grades and carry ample hydration, as there are no water facilities on-site. The park is open daily from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM and is pet-friendly, provided dogs remain on a leash.
